A few weeks ago, my parents were in town and helped us do some major weeding outside (along with lots of other stuff that I promise I'll post pics of soon!) We didn't realize how overgrown the weeds in our side yard had gotten until it was time to clean them up. My dad brought a handy trimmer/saw and a weed eater and we (okay, HE) went to work.
I immediately started drawing connections between weeds and sin. Not a stretch. Basically, the weeds are our idols or "functional saviors". Functional saviors are the things that we put in place of God in the belief that they will lead to true fulfillment. When we think or say things like, "When I just have ______, then I will finally be complete," we're relying on a functional savior. For brevity's sake, I'll refer to my side yard as a "garden" (even though we know it's far from that!) The garden is our soul. And Jesus is the true gardener.
I've been processing this for a few weeks now, but my thoughts tend to get a little jumbled in the spilling out process. Hopefully you'll be able to make some sense of it all! After I was finished and saw the length of my chalkboarding word vomit I heard Jackie's voice chiding me to split it over a few shorter posts, so that's what you get. There should be very little scrolling involved :) Stay tuned for some more thoughts on the nature of weeds.
